The
Black Keys
ThickFreakness
Fat Possum |
Groovy
band from Akron. With a definte low level funk feedback
thing goin
on. Check out
the website http://www.theblackkeys.com/ It's as cool as
their sound. They're similar to the White Stripes with
their lo-fi thing. |

Francis
Jocky
Mr. Pain
KoKo Records |
Jocky's first disc Mr. Pain has
such a nice blend of funk and layered international flavor
that it has many drooling over his potential. See for yourself
why after a few listens you may think the same thing.

G
Love and Special Sauce Lemonade
Brushfire Records |
G
Love has been doing his thing for a few years now,
carving out a niche that is somewhere between hip hop,
rap and
jazz. we'll call jazz-hop. Its funky, it's always daring
and even funner to play it in front of others who have
never heard of him. Invariably they say, "Whozat"?
|
|
Pete
Yorn
Nightcrawler
Columbia |
Pete
Yorn is on the verge of becoming everyone's favorite
question when they hear, "For Us". Off his Nightcrawler
CD released in August of this year. Listen to that
song first and you'll see right away why he could be
the NBT thats been around for a while, of course.

The
Raconteurs
Broken Boy Soldiers
V2 Records/WEA Distribution |
Could
very well be the Disc of the year. Jack White, formerly
of The White Stripes, brings a tinge of everything
to this disc. Its funky, it thumps, it jumps, it's
different, it has it all,
It's a sound that we'll be hearing more often from
other pretenders and wannabe's. Get this. If you do
nothing else with your
miserable life, get this downloaded.

Howie
Day
Stop all the world now
Epic |
Is
it good? It's ok. Is it catchy? yes. Do some songs
grow on you? yes. Can you peg who he sounds like? yes.
Is
that a bad thing? no. So get it and see for yourelves.
Check out the song,"Collide".

James
Hunter
People Gonna Talk
Rounder
|
Can
you say cool? This dude is cool. he reminds us of a
young Boz Scaggs but doesnt sing that pop cheese that
Boz sung
before he realized that he could sing some nice blues
standards and carve out a niche. Nice sax all over
this release. Good for parties.

Ben
Haper
Both Sides of The Gun
Virgin Records America |
Ok
so if you really know Ben Harper, then you'll listen
to this and say,"yep it's Ben alright". Why? Because
Ben Harper is always taking chances and this disc is
no exception. However, as we said earlier, if you know
Ben, then chances are, you like his old stuff, which
aint a bad thing. What it means is you'll play Fight
for Your Mind before you'll play this again.

Corinne
Bailey Rae
EMI UK |
The
UK cranks out talent at an alarming rate. What that means
is, she's prolly well known over the pond and is just
getting her props here in the US. Compare her to Billie
Holliday and Macy Gray and then forget that we said that
and come up with your own conclusion.
|
|
Pearl
Jam
MonkeyWrench |
Remember
what we said about Ben? Well this is close to the same
in comparing old PJ and new PJ., Pearl Jam has cranked
out some tunes on this disc that
will have you remembering the early 90's. Just don't
try and
compare
anything they do to Ten, and you'll never
be disappointed. Overall, a typical quality effort.

Jack
Johnson
In Between Dreams
Jack Johnson |
Picture
this if you will: You have to spend some time in some
gnarly traffic. You
have a long mindless roadtrip ahead. You need to bring
10
CD's with you. Make sure that one of those CD's is
this one. Why? Because one group will think you're
cool to
have it in the first place and the other will want
to know who it is you're listening to. It's up to you
whether you want to tell them or not.

Nikka
Costa
Can'tneverdidnothin
Cheeba Sounds |
Its
hard to find chicks that rock like um Pat Benatar?
(relax we're reaching...)and chicks that have soul
like Aretha.
Here's someone who has that plus some gris gris. get
her first disc too to see another one of the best kept
secrets in the women who rock category. |
|
The
Damnwells
Air Stereo
Zoe Records |
It
would be a shame if this band broke up before you could
hear them. Out of upstate New York, they have the chops
to make it and their sophomore effort is just as good
as their first. Another band that will have people guessing
who they are.
|
|
Martin
Sexton
Black Sheep
Koch Records |
If
you want a keeper. This is it. Actually any of his
discs will do, but this one drives the point
home. He's a touring monster, so chances are you'll get
to see him. Talent that is off the hook. The disc is
one of his finest.
|
|
Ryan
Adams
Love is Hell
Lost Highway Records
|
This
guy does not care what you think. And frankly we don't
care that he doesn't care. Just
let him do his thing. Namely, keep cranking out volumes
of work, each more brilliant and different than the other.
This disc was released in 2004.
|
|
Amos
Lee
Supply and Demand
Koch Records |
If
you would have heard his first disc, you would not
have been able to wait for this second
one. Its called Supply and Demand, as cool as the other
side of the pillow as they say..Buttery smooth.
|

|
John
Butler Trio
Grand National
Atlantic Records |
This
guy is the NBT. Believe us when we tell you, this
disc will be the best of 2007. Incredible
listen. If it's the first disc you've heard from him,
you need to backtrack to "Sunrise Over Sea".
|
 |
Joss
Stone
Introducing Joss Stone
Atlantic Records |
We're
not sure why it's introducing Joss, because if you
don't know who she is at this point, then you
have been living under a rock. Her 2 previous
efforts are better and have more covers but
still
there are a couple of keepers on here.
|
 |
Martin
Sexton
Seeds
Koch Records |
This
guy is one of the singer songwriters of our era.
If you cannot appreciate his ability to wrap his
voice around his guitar, then check the area between
your ears. This disc is ok though, because he has
set such a high standard with his other efforts.
However, if this was the first disc you had ever
heard from him, then you would say,"wow".
|
|
The
Wreckers
Stand still, look pretty
Maverick Records |
Ok
OK, so it's new country, but we gurantee that when
you get done listening to this disc, you're going
to say 2 things; One, "I can't believe how good that
was", and Two, "I guess I like country". Even though
it doesn't sound too too country.
|

|
Grace
Potter
This is Somewhere
Hollywood Records |
Its
Grace Potter and The Nocturnals. Reminds of how Bonnie
Raitt must have been when she first started out.
Jams like there is no tomorrow and can sing like
her life depends on it. Better Live, but you hear
her and you'll wanna see her live.
|
|
Todd
Thibaud
Northern Skies
95 North Records |
This
disc is 2 years old and he has quite a catalogue
and what we liked was, here was a guy who claims
he's not country or alt country, but he reminds of
Whiskeytown a little bit. Check out some of his more
recent stuff and let us know what you think.
|
|
Kaiser
Chiefs
Yours Truly, Angry Mob
Universal Records |
Inspired by Brit icons -- from the
Kinks and the Jam to Oasis and Blur -- the Kaiser Chiefs'
mod vibe and post-punk hooks quickly grabbed the attention
of postmillennial listeners searching for a new brand
of old rock.
